One Microchip — Two Databases. How Can You Protect Your Pet?
A microchip is a sterile capsule containing a unique 15-digit identification number. The chip itself does not store your contact details. To make the microchip useful, its number must be registered in the appropriate databases.
🏛️ Step 1: National TAÑBA Database (Mandatory in Kazakhstan)
TAÑBA is Kazakhstan’s official animal registration system. Registration is required for the legal identification and registration of pets within the country.
- If your pet already has an imported or foreign microchip: The microchip does not need to be replaced. The veterinary clinic can register the existing ISO-compliant microchip as a “previously microchipped animal.”
- How to register: Visit a veterinary clinic with your pet and identification document. You may receive an SMS from eGov to confirm the registration.
- Costs: Registration in the national database itself is free of charge. The veterinary clinic may charge for the veterinary appointment, identification check and data entry service.
✈️ Step 2: International Databases (Recommended for International Travel)
Kazakhstan’s TAÑBA system is primarily a national database. Authorities, veterinary clinics and animal shelters abroad may not have direct access to the owner information stored in this system.
- Before travelling, check your pet’s microchip number using the international Petmaxx search platform.
- If the microchip cannot be found, register it in an international pet database such as Animal ID or AnimalFace. This can link the microchip number to your current international contact details.
Registration of Foreign and Imported Microchips in the TAÑBA System
Dear colleagues, questions frequently arise regarding the registration of animals that were microchipped outside Kazakhstan, for example in Russia, China or other countries.
1. Foreign Microchips Are Accepted
The TAÑBA system supports microchips that comply with the international ISO 11784/11785 standards. Any valid 15-digit ISO microchip can be registered in the system.
2. Select the Correct Registration Option
Do not register an imported microchip as a new microchip. Use the option “Previously Microchipped Animal”.
3. Costs and Veterinary Service Fees
The national system does not charge the veterinary clinic a fee solely for registering an existing microchip. Veterinary clinics may set their own service fees for the appointment, identification check and completion of the animal’s registration record.
💡 Tip for Veterinary Professionals: If the system displays an error when entering an imported microchip, check that the number contains exactly 15 digits and no letters or spaces. The issue may also be caused by a temporary technical error in the Kezekte platform rather than a restriction on foreign microchips.
